Sweden v Holland: World Cup 2018 Qualifying Preview

Sweden lacks a cutting-edge forward, following Ibrahimović’s retirement, which will make it tough for them to sneak a winner against Holland.

Sweden v Holland: World Cup 2018 Qualifying Preview
Match Date: 06 September 2016 (local time)
Venue: Friends Arena (Solna)

Sweden

Sweden finished last in a tough Euro 2016 group, ending up behind Italy, Belgium and Ireland. Admittedly, the Swedish did not have their best team compared to recent years, but they were fortunate not to lose to the Irish in a 1-1 draw.

In qualifying for Euro 2016, Sweden had one of the simpler journeys, finishing 3rd in a group with Austria, Russia, Montenegro, Liechtenstein, and Moldova. After claiming 3rd, the Swedish then defeated a poor Denmark side to make the tournament.

Sweden benefited from the expanded format of Euro 2016, but that will not happen during World Cup qualifying. Ultimately, the Swedish will have to upset France or Holland if they want to stand a chance of making the 2018 tournament.

For Sweden, they have long been able to fall back on the brilliance of Zlatan Ibrahimović, who retired after the Euros. Without the Man Utd striker, Sweden no longer have a star capable of bailing them out of difficult situations.

The current Sweden squad is extremely short on quality, with 30-year-old Panathinaikos striker Marcus Berg being the best attacking player and having no competition. Comparatively, names like Andreas Granqvist, Mikael Lustig, and Jimmy Durmaz are not close to what Holland have at their disposal.

Holland

Holland were terrible in their Euro 2016 qualifiers, ending up 4th behind the Czech Republic, Iceland, and Turkey. After a disastrous start under Guus Hiddink, Danny Blind finished the campaign and was unable to make up for the poor start. In his first 11 games, Blind has won six, drawn one, and lost four, so he must improve.

Compared to previous years, Holland have one of the weaker squads in recent memory. That being said, they have more talented players than Sweden, but it’s a matter of finding the right tactics and getting them to play well with each other.

In defence, Ron Vlaar, Daley blind, and Virgil van Dijk provide talented options for their coach. But where Blind needs to get things right is in midfield, with Riechedly Bazoer, Davy Klaassen, and Davy Pröpper offering younger prospects who need to be worked in.

Wesley Sneijder is still in the squad, but the 32-year-old is advancing in years and might be used sparingly. As such, Georginio Wijnaldum and Kevin Strootman will have stand up and provide a solid base in midfield.

Up front, there are a few talented options, with Luuk de Jong arguably being the best, with Tottenham’s Vincent Janssen dealing with the pressure of coping with a high-value summer transfer.

Sweden lacks a cutting-edge forward, following Ibrahimović’s retirement, which will make it tough for them to sneak a winner against Holland. Meanwhile, Holland might struggle to break down the Swedish, as they do not have a midfield that is used to playing with each other.

It would not be shocking to see a tense draw.

Netherlands have lost none of their last 6 away matches.

Sweden haven't lost in any of their last 5 home matches.
