Man. City vs. Man. United - Premier League Preview

Manchester City vs. Manchester UnitedOut of nine league games, Man City have won five, drawn two, and lost two. Manuel Pellegrini will be striving to halt the rot and rebound with a victory against the club’s bitterest rivals. In favour of City is an absence of long-term injury victims.

Manchester City vs. Manchester United
Match Date: 02 November 2014 (local time)
Match Venue: Etihad Stadium (Manchester)

Manchester City

One week Man City look unstoppable and the next they are brought back down to earth – it’s been a familiar formula since the Arab oil money came surging into central Manchester. And on that logic, Man City are going to return to form and beat Man Utd convincingly. Two weeks ago, Man City destroyed Tottenham 4-1 at the Etihad and it could have been much worse. In their next fixture, the side was 2-0 down after 75 minutes and only managed to salvage a 2-1 loss after David Silva’s 77-minute goal. Performance-wise, the Citizens dominated possession with close to 70%. West Ham manager Sam Allardyce returned to his Bolton tactics to frustrate City in the final third. During the entire game, City could only generate five strikes on goal for all of their possession. Out of nine league games, Man City have won five, drawn two, and lost two. Manuel Pellegrini will be striving to halt the rot and rebound with a victory against the club’s bitterest rivals. In favour of City is an absence of long-term injury victims.

Manchester United

Eight games into the season and Man Utd manager Louis van Gaal implemented a 4-3-3 formation against Chelsea for yet another tactical change for the season. However, this was forced upon by the Wayne Rooney suspension and knock to Radamel Falcao in a training session leading up to the game. For all of the pre-match discussion of Man Utd’s latest formation, it can’t be denied that the side played well in their home encounter with Chelsea and José Mourinho. United were able to edge possession 52% to 48% in spite of going up against the Blues’ revamped midfield. As for shots on target, United created seven on target versus four for Chelsea. The Red Devils were unlucky to go behind in the 53rd after Didier Drogba scored from a corner. However, a late goal from Robin van Persie was enough to share the honours. Looking back at the Man Utd-Chelsea game, it appeared as if Mourinho gave considerable respect to his former mentor. This Sunday, though, Pellegrini owes no such debt to van Gaal. He will instruct his midfield to overpower his red rivals, which is entirely possible if Yaya Touré can muster a dominating performance.

Possible head turners Where Chelsea were forced to get by with an ageing Didier Drogba, Man City will have the world-class striking talents of Sergio Agüero to trouble Man Utd with. There is no way that United will be able to cope with the movement and finishing ability of the Argentinian. Backing Man City is the sensible move, here, with the side in a real position to punish the frail defensive partnership of Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling, neither of whom looked entirely convincing against Chelsea.
